March 2010

Name:

Catrin Jones

Named 5x60 Officer of the Month for March, Catrin is just one of the motivators recruited by the Sports Council for Wales’ 5x60 scheme, which is funded by the Welsh Assembly Government.

Supported locally by Ceredigion County Council, it is designed to get more secondary school pupils taking part in 60 minutes of physical activity five times a week.

The 25-year-old from Tregaron, who has played hockey, netball and football at county level, has persuaded scores of pupils to get off the sidelines into the 5x60 activity sessions.

Catrin has been in post for three years, and in that time has introduced a timetable of nine activities at both schools. The three most popular have proven to be bench ball*, indoor climbing and 5-a-side football leagues.

She explains: "I enjoy having such a wide variety of sports and activities to work with and also interacting with the pupils and seeing their enthusiasm for the 5x60 activities. Children from a Communities First area have grabbed the opportunity to participate in 5x60 activities such as 5-a-side, hip-hop and bench ball. Also, the 5x60 Special Educational Needs (SEN) Yoga has benefited many pupils in the school and has been a big success."

Penglais Year 8 pupils, Megan and Amy said: "They’re the best clubs we’ve ever had! You can do 5x60 with your mates, it’s fun and the best thing in the world!"
